Alternating Turing machines for inductive languages
نویسنده
چکیده
We show that alternating Turing machines, with a novel and natural definition of acceptance, accept precisely the inductive (Π11) languages. Total alternating machines, that either accept or reject each input, accept precisely the hyper-elementary (∆11) languages. Moreover, bounding the permissible number of alternations yields a characterization of the levels of the arithmetical hierarchy. Notably, these results use simple finite computing devices, with finitary and discrete operational semantics, and neither the results nor their proofs make any use of transfinite ordinals. Our characterizations elucidate the analogy between the polynomial-time hierarchy and the arithmetical hierarchy, as well as between their respective limits, namely polynomial-space and Π11.

Alternating Turing machines and the analytical hierarchy
We use notions originating in Computational Complexity to provide insight into the analogies between Computational Complexity and Higher Recursion Theory. We consider alternating Turing machines, but with a modified, global, definition of acceptance. We show that a language is accepted by such a machine iff it is inductive (Π1). Moreover, total alternating machines, which either accept or rejec...
متن کاملSome improvements in fuzzy turing machines
In this paper, we improve some previous definitions of fuzzy-type Turing machines to obtain degrees of accepting and rejecting in a computational manner. We apply a BFS-based search method and some level’s upper bounds to propose a computational process in calculating degrees of accepting and rejecting. Next, we introduce the class of Extended Fuzzy Turing Machines equipped with indeterminacy s...
متن کاملInductive Counting below LOGSPACE
We apply the inductive counting technique to nondetermin-istic branching programs and prove that complementation on this model can be done without increasing the width of the branching programs too much. This shows that for an arbitrary space bound s(n), the class of languages accepted by nonuniform nondeterministic O(s(n)) space bounded Turing machines is closed under complementation. As a con...
متن کاملBounded Fixed-Point Definability and Tabular Recognition of Languages
By relating positive inductive definitions to space-bounded computations of alternating Turing machines, Rounds, Comp. Linguistics 14, 1988, has given uniform grammatical characterizations of the EXPTIME and PTIME languages. But his proof gives fairly poor bounds for language recognition with context-free resp. head grammars. We improve Rounds’ analysis in two respects: first, we introduce a mo...
متن کاملAlternation on Cellular Automata
In this paper we consider several notions of alternation in cellular automata: non-uniform, uniform and weak alternation. We study relations among these notions and with alternating Turing machines. It is proved that the languages accepted in polynomial time by alternating Turing machines are those accepted by alternating cellular automata in polynomial time for all the proposed alternating cel...
